New York Homeschool 101
In the United States, 4 out of our 50 states have high regulations for homeschool laws. New York is one of them. It can be very overwhelming to navigate through all the paperwork.
However, it is doable. I include some tips in the last slide below as well as some resources that will hopefully be useful to you.
But first, some highlights of the major requirements for NYS.

WEBSITES
Remember, these are just highlights. There are plenty of more details pertaining to NYS homeschool regulations so it is very important for you to familiarize yourself with them. The following are informative websites that can be trusted for accuracy.
- New York State Education Dept
- HSLDA (If you haven’t joined the HSLDA, I highly recommend you do. They are an amazing team of attorneys and educational consultants who are passionate about defending homeschooling families and helping them thrive.)
- Homeschool New York FKA LEAH-Loving Education At Home (Looking for a homeschool support group? Leah is it! They serve the entire state of NY via various chapters. If you’re close to the Bronx/Westchester as I am, then my chapter CLEAH is extremely supportive and a complete God-send.
POSTS ON STARTING HOMESCHOOLING
I wrote a few posts for new homeschoolers that may be helpful as well.
TEMPLATES
Here are 3 templates I use for the Letter of Intent, IHIP and QR’s based off of the NYCDOE’s templates. I’m attaching below a word doc so you can tweak and use for your own needs. It may appear discombobulated on you end. Therefore, I included the PDF version so you can see how it’s supposed to look.
Letter of Intent
The Letter of Intent simply looks something like this:
I am sending this letter of intent as required of Section 100.10 of the Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
I intend to homeschool my child, ___________________ (DOB __/__/__), who will be entering ___ grade for the 20__-20__ school year.
Sincerely,
