Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx/
La juez que creció en el Bronx

by Jonah Winter

In this story we meet Sonia Sotomayor who the author compares to a flower that blossoms in an usual place. Sonia is Puertorican and was born in the Bronx, NY, a “Nuyorican.” She was raised by her mother. Her father died when she was only nine. Sonia’s family was poor but her mother was always working hard to give her and her brother a good life.

Sonia always wanted to be a detective and pretended to be Nancy Drew, her favorite book character. Sonia loved the TV show Perry Mason, and from this show she got inspired to be a judge because of an episode that ended with a judge- the most powerful person in the courtroom. Even though she had diabetes, that didn’t stop Sonia from wanting to be a judge. While other kids were playing and goofing around, Sonia studied. In the book there are many pictures of Sonia reading a book. She loved to read. Sonia was reading so much and getting smarter, like a flower that keeps growing.

Sonia made history by becoming the nation’s first Latin American Supreme Court Justice. I love the quote at the end when the author says, “You never know what can happen especially when you water a flower.” There is a connection between Sonia and the flower because if you keep on learning you will grow like a flower.

I enjoyed this book because it inspires me to read more just like Sonia did. I am from the Bronx too and I am “Nuyorican” just like her.
