The Color of My Words
by Lynn Joseph
Ana Rosa is a twelve yer old girl who wants to be a writer when she grows up. However, she lives in the Dominican Republic during a time where words are feared. Yet there is so much inspiration around her that she can’t resist the temptation of keeping silent.
At the beginning, her mother discourages her from writing for fear of getting hurt by people in government. But later on, her mom and entire family realize that it is her gift and she must pursue it. Her written words not only comfort her, but she soon realizes that her words can help her community. She realizes that words are her life and have power.
What I love about the book was her description of the island and culture. I love that she ran to the ocean for comfort and climbed a Gri-Gri tree to write.
I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn a little bit about Dominican Republic or who loves reading or writing.
My favorite quote is,” I sit high in my Gri-Gri tree where I can survey all below me.”
