WARRIORS: Into the Wild
by Erin Hunter
A dream. That’s where it all started. Rusty was a normal “Kitty-pet”. He ate fish-shaped pellets, drank foul tasting Two-leg water, slept in a soft round bed, and went outside only when his Two-leg let him. He was getting bored and tired of his ongoing, repetitive Kitty-pet life. On top of that, he felt the forest calling to him through dreams of chasing mice, making him want to wander off into its depths and run until he could breathe no more. But yet, he didn’t want to leave the safety of his Two-leg nest, and he couldn’t take the risks of being eaten by those so-called wild cats. His Kitty-pet neighbor, Smudge, had warned Rusty about the Wild Cats, who live in clans in the depths of the forest. But instead of being scared, Rusty takes the courage to venture into the forest and see for himself. Why not? But just as he enters the depths of the trees, he encounters a small cat, who is a part of the clans. They nearly tackle each other, but Rusty surprisingly defeats the small apprentice, who later becomes his best friend.
The clan leader ends up inviting Rusty to join the clan, but she gives him no more than 1 day to make his decision. Rusty thought, and in the morning he ran away to join the wild cats. When he got there, most of the cats there weren’t very hospitable and judged him because he was a “Kitty-Pet”. He fought with one of the cats, and his collar snapped off in the midst of it. The cats were a bit more open to Rusty now, because they assumed it was a “sign from Starclan”. Still, a few cats despised him, even when he proved his loyalty to the cats more than 3 times. Throughout the book, Rusty or later named “Firepaw” 😉 proves his loyalty to his clan, his leader, and most of all, he believed in himself.
What I enjoyed about this book is that the author didn’t make the cats all the same, and didn’t just make them go “meow meow, I ate fish, slept, and saved the day”. The cats had troubles of their own and they worked together to help their clans, as well as helping other clans, even if that meant sacrificing some fresh-kill ;). This series also shows you don’t have to be the same race, color, or cultural background as everyone else to do great things, (Kitty-pet or clan-born) ;). It also shows you to do the right thing, and to use your abilities for the good, and not for being boastful or putting others down. I hope you enjoy “Warriors: The Prophecies begin” as much as I did.
Good Luck, Reader!
